Temple II, 2023
(performance)
Duration: 60 minutes
In ‘Temple II’, I use my hands to cover myself in mud, starting with my feet, legs, face, hair, and eyes, until I become one with the material. It expands with my breath and reveals my skin underneath the cracks. I meditate while being enclosed in the mud as though being absorbed by the earth. The outer layers of the mud settle and harden on my body. The mud grips onto my skin, tighter with each breath. I remain still, in conversation with the unseen, the space that lies in between being and becoming. Transformation takes place on the exterior and renewal on the interior. The mud’s presence on my skin begins a conversation between sentience and insentience. By heightening my awareness, I meditate on the materiality of senses, on the liveness of seemingly insentient materials and their transitions over time.
